We are constantly being told what is in, what is out, what makes a home look dated, and what apparently needs to disappear immediately if we ever want anyone on the internet to approve of our kitchen. Raised bars are out. Certain cabinet colors are out. Open concept is in, then it is out, then walls are back in. Dining rooms are supposedly disappearing. Bathtubs are unnecessary until suddenly everyone wants a beautiful soaking tub again.

And somewhere in all of that noise, I think we have started confusing the word “updated” with the word “better.” Those two things are not always the same.

I cannot tell you how many times I have walked into a client’s home for the first time and one of the very first things they say is, “Please excuse the mess.”

And my response is almost always the same. “Please don’t apologize. I actually want to see how you live.”

Because the truth is, I am not walking into your home looking for everything that is wrong. I am not judging the pile of shoes by the door, the toys that have somehow made their way into every room of the house, or the laundry that may or may not be folded somewhere nearby. And honestly, if you have kids, pets, and a busy schedule, I would be more surprised if those things weren’t there.

What I am looking for is information.

Most people start a home project telling themselves a version of the same story. That they can figure it out as they go, that decisions can be made one at a time, and that if they need help later, they can always bring someone in. And for a while, that story works. The ideas are flowing, a few selections get made, and everything feels like it’s moving in the right direction. Until it doesn’t. Somewhere along the way, things start to feel heavier. Not necessarily wrong, just more layered than expected. And that’s usually the moment when people start to wonder if they should have brought someone in sooner.

This summer, I have found myself drawn to inspiration that feels deeply connected to the way families live. The moments that happen naturally inside a home. The conversations around the kitchen island after a long day. The doors left open while children run outside. The gathering of friends and family around a table. The quiet corners where memories are created without anyone realizing it.

The very first time I walked into this home, the mom looked at me and said, “I just can’t stand the fireplace.”

And honestly? I loved the honesty.

There was something about that moment that gives us such a strong place to begin.

When clients come to me to design and furnish their homes, they always ask me this one question.

“What should I expect to invest per room?”

And I understand why that question comes up. Because when you’re looking at your home as a whole, it can feel hard to know where to even begin. Everything feels important. Every room carries weight. And without a clear understanding of how investment typically breaks down, it’s easy to either underestimate or feel unsure of what’s realistic.

So instead of speaking generally,  I want to walk you through this in a more real and raw room-by-room way.

In a world of Instagram and AI, people can make design seem easy and snap your fingers quick. It’s just selecting paint colors and tile anyway, right? So, you tell yourself, I’ve got this. The honest truth is this: a design project involves loads of decisions and involves lots of people. Remember that what you see on the internet is just a highlight reel for the most part and doesn’t share everything involved. There are experts for a reason and there is no shame in admitting that you do need an interior designer because the value comes from saving you mistakes, time, and stress.
