Popular Tile Layouts for a Timeless and Elevated Home
When it comes to creating a timeless and elevated home, tile selection goes beyond just the material or color. The layout plays an equally important role in the overall design. The way tile is laid can completely transform the feel of a room, making it more modern, traditional, or luxurious depending on the pattern. Because of this, I always encourage my clients to consider layout options early in the design process. Below, I’ve highlighted some of the most popular tile layouts we love using in our projects, along with tips to help you choose the right one for your home.
Staggered Bond Tile Layout
The first and probably most popular tile layout that we incorporate into our designs is the staggered bond. This layout is also sometimes called a running bond. This tile layout works best in classic or transitional spaces as it provides a timeless backdrop that doesn’t feel to trendy or dated over time. The subtle offset pattern in this tile layout adds interest without overpowering other items in the design like cabinetry, fixtures, or statement pieces.
Vertical Stacked Tile Layout
For modern or contemporary interiors, I guide my clients towards a tile layout called vertical stacked. You have probably seen this show up in several baths and kitchens over the past two years. The way this tile is laid, for instance in a shower, can make ceilings appear taller which is especially helpful in smaller spaces. The layout is crisp and uninterrrupted. This tile layout is a great option when we are sourcing for tile that can offer a sleek, architectural look to pair with modern plumbing fixtures and minimalist cabinetry. A vertical stacked layout tends to be a good choice for clients who like a clean, gallery like environment that still feels warm when paired with natural stone or wood accents.
Straight Lay or Grid Tile Layout
The straight lay or grid tile layout became poular during the modern farmhouse era and is still used for European farmhouse and minimalist designs. What I love about this tile layout is that it creates a quiet, structured feel that lets other elements still take center stage. Often, you will see it paired with natural wood tones, stone counters, or bold lighting. This is often the budget friendly option since it is fairly easy to execute by installers but still looks elevated. As pictured, this tile layout works best with square tiles or handmade tiles where the character and texture of the material can shine. This is the best option for our clients who want their home to feel simple, approachable, and uncluttered while still elevated.
Herringbone Tile Layout
Often seen in European inspired, luxury homes, the herringbone tile layout adds instant sophistication and a sense of craftsmanship. The diagonal movemement draws the eye and brings energy to any space. It is most popularly seen in foyers, showers, or feature walls. This tile layout can be especially impactful with natural stone or marble tile which elevates this pattern further. If you appreciate a home that is elegant, timeless, and layered, the herrignbone layout can provide that kind of detial that feels custom.
Basketweave Tile Layout
The basketweave tile layout is another popular favorite that works best in traditional or cottage inspired homes. The way this tile layout is placed adds vintage charm and a cozy, textural feel. This is another tile layout that is perfect for mudrooms, guest bathrooms, or secondary spaces that need warmth. Basketwewave works best with natural, handmade tiles and gives off so much personality in a space. This tile layout is a great option if you prefer a more lived in look that feels welcoming.
Note on Grout
When selecting the perfect tile layout for our clients, we always like to consider the grout at the same time because grout changes the overall affect of the tile lyout. To make it simple, here are the two ways to think of when selecting grout. Matching grout creates a soft, seamless backdop that just blends in while contrasting grout creates bold lines that highlight the pattern and adds visual interest. We always test the grout on a sample board first for our clients. This tiny detail can make a luxury project feel truly finished and intentional.
Tile layout is just one of hundreds of decisions necesssary during the design process. It may seem like a small design choice, but it’s one of those details that makes a home feel intentional and well-designed. Whether you’re drawn to the clean lines of a vertical stack, the timeless feel of a staggered bond, or the sophistication of a herringbone, the right layout should complement both your personal style and the architecture of your home. My goal is always to guide clients toward decisions that make their spaces feel beautiful, functional, and tailored to their lifestyle for years to come.
