Rethinking Interior Design: Investment or Expense?

Today, I’m going to give you a few reasons why hiring an interior designer is an investment instead of an expense. Clients often shy away from interior design because it is too expensive. Although hiring an interior designer as an expert in their field does incur a cost, it all comes down to a shift in mindset. This mindset shift has to do with whether you view hiring an interior designer as an expense or as an investment

In its simplest definition the Webster Dictionary defines expense as the cost required for something; the money spent on something. You have probably heard the saying that nothing in life is free and to be honest that’s true. Everything in life can be viewed as an expense but how often do we view our gym membership as an expense? Maybe going out on a quality date night? Do you view your driving to a fun vacation spot as an expense? Most people view those things and others in their lives as more of an investment instead of an expense.

One of the best definitions of investment is an act of devoting time, effort, or energy to a particular undertaking with the expectation of a worthwhile result. When you take a moment to think about it, most everything in your life can be divided into those two categories depending on your perspective. So how does all this tie into hiring an interior designer?

Reason Number One: Interior Designers enhance your lifestyle.

When you hire an interior designer, their job is to create a beautiful space that is functional to your lifestyle, unique to your tastes, and tailored by their expertise. An interior designer puts into action what you have been envisioning but couldn’t quite accomplish on your own. Although budget plays a huge role in the interior design process, an interior designer’s goal is always to create a space to enhance the life you currently lead.

Reason Number Two: Interior designers highlight the characteristics of your home for potential resale.

Although there is a difference between living in your home and selling your home, by hiring an interior designer, you are winning in both areas. First, you are going to be able to enjoy this space for many years with family and friends. Second, if there ever comes a time to sell the property, you will already have a well-furnished and updated home that increases its overall value.

Reason Number Three: Interior designers add expertise to the renovation experience.

Hiring an interior designer means that they will handle everything for you as an expert in their field. From budget discussions to furniture purchases to installation teams, hiring an interior designer allows you to keep living your life while they work on enhancing your everyday spaces.

As with anything in life, hiring an interior designer does come with a cost. However, when you view hiring an interior designer as an expense, it may cost you more in the long term while failing to achieve the home aesthetic you desire. However, when you view interior design as an investment for the long-term benefit of your property’s value and your family’s ultimate functionality, you’ll discover it makes all the difference. Interior design is costly but well worth the investment.
