Timeless Design, Evolved: Timeless Design Versus Trendy Design for Family Interiors
Welcome to this five part series I like to call, “Timeless Design, Evolved.” It sounds a bit dramatic but truly has been on my heart for a while. There has been allot of controversy about following or not following trends in the realm of interior design. I work with clients who are undertaking either a large scale renovation or custom build home. In both of these cases, it’s important that my clients know where to invest their resources which is where I come in. In a world where design trends shift overnight, how do you create a home that feels fresh today— and just as inviting years from now. In upcoming blogs, I am going to delve deeper into the design elements that are design staples and how they look in today’s interior design landscape. For this first blog though, I want to focus on defining the terms, outline elements I believe to be design staples not trends, and propose that a home truly needs both trends and staples for a well balanced aesthetic.
Defining the Terms
I understand the desire(and sometimes pressure) of wanting to stay current with design trends. For those of you who have active families and are building a home or undergoing a large scale renovation, it may seem unattainable to keep up with the trends. The great thing is that you will not have to as long as your foundation is rooted in these design staples. These “timeless” elements will give you the freedom to live in homes that can withstand real life with kids and pets. How do I know? Because these design staples have been around in variations for years and will continue to be. So, what is timeless? what is trendy?
Timeless interiors are thoughtfully curated spaces built on enduring elements— spaces that gracefully evolve without losing their heart. For active families seeking thoughtful interior design, this is important because a timeless foundation will be more durable, have more flexibility, and feel more connected on a daily basis. Trendy interiors chase the moment— they’re packed with the colors, materials, and styles that dominate our pinterest boards and Instagram feeds today, but they often fade fast as the next “it” look takes over. While trendy interiors can be exciting and energizing, when overdone, they risk creating spaces that feel impersonal, overly curated for social media, or in need of a full refresh after just a few years.
There is a delicate balance to incorporating both timeless design staples and trending pieces when designing, but the overarching thought is that your family home should feel collected, not trendy. Think soulful, not showy. Blending timeless elements with trend touches(when done right) keeps a home feeling current without losing an elevated look.

The Curated List
Neutral Color Palettes - These have evolved from crisp whites to today’s warm, earthy neutrals like griege, sand, cream, and soft taupes. Why timeless: They create a calming, adaptable foundation for any style.
Natural Materials - These have been around for a while — marble, leather, wood, linen — but today’s versions focus on quality sourcing and artisanal finishes. Why timeless: Organic textures and authenticity never go out of style.
Symmetry and Balance - The more traditional symmetry has changed to be softer and more fluid while still maintaining the principle of visual balance both in classic and contemporary spaces. Why timeless: Human brains are wired to love visual harmony.
4. Statement Lighting - Everyone has loves a good lighting package which has come in the form ofr chandeliers and pendants becoming less ornate and more sculptural and minimalistic. Why timeless: Lighting serves both form and function — and can instantly elevate a space.
5. Built In Storage - Think classic bookcases and banquettes updated to sleek custom millwork or hidden storage walls. Why timeless: Good storage equals good living.
6. Quality over Quantity - Less is more has been on the scene for ages but this time the emphasis is shifting towards craftsmanship and heirloom worthy pieces. Why timeless: Well-made pieces outlive trends and tell a story.
7. Architectural Details - Elements like crown molding, coffered ceilings, arched doorways, and wainscoting have developed into cleaner, more simple expressions that still anchor a space beautifully. Why timeless: Subtle architectural elements add depth and soul to any room.
8. Indoor - Outdoor Connection - From just french doors and sunrooms to the now full glass walls, biophilic design, and seamless indoor-outdoor living. Why timeless: We crave a connection to nature.
9. Iconic Furniture Silhouetts - Mid-century chairs, Chesterfield sofas, and Parsons tables are reimagined with updated fabrics, proportions, and sustainable construction. Why timeless: Great lines and proportions transcend decades.
10. Personalization and Storytelling - There is no doubt that mass produced is easy but timeless interiors always include personal pieces, meaningful art, and custom touches. Why timeless: People live in homes, not showrooms.
When designing homes for my full service design clients, I remind them that our design focus is about thoughtful, intentional choices, not rigid rules. I design for longevity and most active families want their home to last throughout real life. A timeless home isn’t frozen in time — it evolves with your family, rooted in a foundation built to last.
